One dogs story.......

Around Tucson and the country, thousands of pets are abandoned, lost or even abused. This is the story of just one dog, who because of her past has lost all trust in anything around her.....she is just one of many who need help. This is has been a journey for everyone of her fans and all the people who have tried to help "Bring River Home"

River-The wash dog! Before rescue.

About "River"

River was fisrt noticed by a person passing by the area, she was unable to catch her, but posted her on Craigslist, from there, more sightings occured, and a group of people got together to make a plan to save her! She lives in the Rillito River, at first she was just the "wash dog" but now is known by many as "River"

She is a beautiful Shepard mix, wearing a collar, she has been living in the same area since at least November 2009, she is a very curious girl, loves to watch people and other dogs, just doesnt like to be approached. She will come to some but always keeps some distance. She loves treats and food.

We dont know her past story, she could be someones lost pet,or another dumped dog?All we know is we would like to see her in a safer enviroment, hopefully a loving home.

RIVER WAS RESCUED 2/13/10

Thanks Danielle, Duet, and Mark!

  1. I noticed that River has learned how to enter and exit a trap without getting caught. One question though is have you tried an enclosure trap rather than a normal humane trap? It would look more like a regular part of a normal residential landscape rather than a trap that she has to enter and get totally trapped in. I had a dog once that I was trying to catch and she would not enter anything that she had to bend down for. Once we built a roomier type trap, we had to train her for a few days but she finally entered and set off the trap. It might work, as she could have been caught in a normal humane trap before and knows how it works.

  3. River seems to be quite "cagey", pardon my pun! Have you considered you may have stumbled upon a real vagabond? A spirit that doesn't want to be caught? After all, she's got the attention and love of the area residents. All things considered, I wish you luck.

  4. The enclosure trap that we used was built from scratch and had a trip plate that would set off the drop of a door that was basically built like a guillotine door. It was a piece of plywood that dropped down and closed off the entry way as soon as the dog hits the trip plate. Of course, it has to be set so that the dog can't hit the trip plate and back out of the trap as quickly as in a normal humane trap. 'bags of trash' can be placed near the door of the trap to prevent the dog from quickly back straight out. If you have someone really good with building stuff from scratch, it could be constructed in a few hours and after training her to enter it for a few days, the trap could be set to go off and hopefully capture her. It worked for the super scared dogs that we've caught in my rescue and the one that it was built for wouldn't enter a normal trap.
